Some thoughts on being self-employed online
So many people are turning to the internet to try to earn a living, because the real world is shedding jobs. We hear all about the success stories, people who have managed to make a lot of money. But the truth is that most self-employed net earners make little.
Is it because of lack of persistence, are they simply focusing on the wrong things, or is it more to do with the fact that they are spending most of their time doing things that pay very little? The thing about working online is that it is easy to flit from one thing to another. there is always hoopla over the next thing that will make you rich. People sign up in a hurry, try it, it doesn’t yield instant results, or isn’t as good as it was made out to be, drop it, and then go onto the next thing. This cycle happens over and over again, and an awful lot of time and energy gets wasted in the process.
While it is always good to have more than one income stream, it is also sensible to focus on no more than three or four different online earning methods, and go all out to make them a success. This could be as simple as writing a blog, and spending a good two hours a day promoting it, day after day. As opposed to writing a blog, getting very excited and doing some initial promotion, and then going onto the next thing and hoping that the gods of google take care of traffic to your original venture.
The longer I do this, the more I realise it’s about staying focused and not spending too much time on things that don’t really pay off.
