Who to call for help if you are in trouble with debt (UK)
If you are badly in trouble with debt, and frantically trying to avoid phone calls from debt collectors, and feeling panicked about your situation, you can get free impartial advice to help you through the situation.
The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) is a registered charity that has detailed information on their website, plus a free phone helpline where you can call and talk in confidence to an advisor. They will usually tell you what your rights are, calm your nerves and help you negotiate agreements with your creditors. They can even negotiate on your behalf if you feel unable to do it yourself.
The National Debtline is an industry funded service that is free to use. Again, their website has a wealth of helpful information and you can speak directly to one of their advisors.
It is best to talk to these impartial organisations about your problems than to listen to the debt consolidation firms, who extract a heavy fee for supposedly helping you sort out your debt problems.
